The WebSite X5 work environment

As we mentioned, WebSite X5 is a wizard: its intuitive sections guide you through the process and help you provide all the general information which is necessary to create and publish a complete, functional and graphically appealing website.

When you start the software, a Welcome page is displayed: it reports information about your account status, links to useful resources and, above all, the commands you need to perform some basic activities, such as creating a new project or opening an existing project.

The sections displayed after creating or opening a project, share the same user interface reporting some buttons on top and on the left, which are the same for each section, and a central window which changes according to the part of the website creation you are taking care of, therefore according to the requested information.

Depending on the screen size of the PC you are working on, you are free to resize the WebSite X5 window:  you just need to place the mouse on the window border and drag it to enlarge or reduce it. If the available space is enough, a Suggestion Toolbar is displayed on the right, reporting some guides related to the specific function of the current section, which you can access by clicking on the Guide name itself.

#tip - More details about this topic are available on The WebSite X5 work environment.

Creating a new project

Everything starts with a new project, so on the Welcome Page you see after starting the software, you need to click on New Project.

First, choose the template you want to use: browse through the categories, select the templates you find interesting and use the Preview button to see them more in details. The preset templates are actually mini websites that include the graphic design and some pages: the preview function gives you the possibility of appreciating each detail and verifying its browsability, even on different resolutions.

#tip - For more information, please see: How to use a default template.

If instead of using one of the present templates, you prefer to set up your own graphic design, you should go for an empty template: in this way, you will start off a "blank canvas" and design the pages the way you want.

#tip - Do you want to learn more about how to create your own template? See: How to create a new template from an empty template.

Once you find the perfect template for your project, select it and click on Next (or simply double-click on it). After the template is loaded, you will find yourself on Step 1, ready to define the first website settings and get to the heart of the development of your web pages.

Adding new pages

After choosing the template, you can define some general settings (on Step 1) and work on all the graphic aspects and styles (on Step 2) so to completely customize your pages. Otherwise, you can tale care of these aspects later and move on to the next phase, which is adding new pages to your project.

You are on Step 3, and you need to set up your website map.

The map is the tree structure of your website. Start from the Home Page and add all the pages you need, organizing them into levels and sublevels. All the map entries will become menu entries: pay attention to how you organize and rename them.

#tip - Adding, organizing in levels, removing or moving pages is really simple. In the How to create the website guide, you will find all the information you need.

Importing contents

Now that you have a template and an outline of your website structure with some empty pages, you can move on to adding the first contents.

Select the page you want to work on - possibly the Home Page - and click on Next  (or alternatively double-click on the page itself) to switch to Step 4. Here, you will find a layout grid representing the page and a list of Objects: these are all the content types you can use.

To set up the pages, select the Object corresponding to the content you want to add (for instance, the Text Object if you want to add a text section), click and drag it to the cell you want it to be displayed in.

You can increase the size of the Object, so it fits into multiple adjacent cells, as well as add rows and columns to the grid: in this way, you can make a more interesting page structure.

The list of available Objects fulfills all your possible needs: you can add texts, images, galleries, videos, e-mail forms and much more.  In addition to the preset Objects, you can then rely on the many Optional Objects available on the Marketplace: you can directly download them on your project if they are free or buy and use them on your websites so to make them even richer and more interesting.

After adding the Object to the page, you will just need to select it and click on Next (or double-click on it) to access to the settings window to set them up.

#tip - Working on the layout gird, dragging and dropping the Objects is quick and easy. Find out more about How to set up the page layout table and How to add contents to the page layout table.

Generating text contents with the AI

If you are working with an active license of WebSite X5 Pro (starting from version 2023.2), you can rely on an additional tool to generate text contents for your website: it's MaigText, an Artificial Intelligence-based text generation assistant.

You can open MagicText by clicking on the   button available in many fields and in the text editor: choose the kind of text you want to generate, report what you want to be mentioned, and the assistant will generate a text, which you can then simply copy or paste on your project.

You can use MagicText to find new ideas or to write titles, SEO titles, paragraphs and tags. In short, MagicText is a new way of writing texts, boosting your creativity and increasing your productivity.

#tip - The great thing about MagicText is its understanding of natural language, which is what makes it so easy to use. Find out more on What's MagicText and how can I use it to generate text contents.

Displaying the Preview

While working on the creation of your website, you can display the local preview any time you need to verify how your pages will look and work once they're online.

The local preview uses an internal Browser and opens in a new window which doesn't affect the preset Browser one you possibly have opened before.

You can keep the local preview constantly up-to-date with the new changes you apply to the project: in this way, you will be able to create your pages more quickly.
