Compatibility:

WebSite X5 Evo and Pro

There are many cases in which you will need to import a file while working on your website: you may need to add an image while preparing a template, or, when setting up your pages, you may have to add or connect images, video, audio or any other kind of files.

Regardless the result you want to get and the file you need to add, in these cases you always rely on the same File Selection window. With this window, in fact, you can search files stored on your PC or online, select the wished ones and import them. All the files are automatically added to the Library of the resources connected to the Project. In order for you to easily find and re-use files you already used on your Project, this Library is reported on the File Selection window among the other available sources.

Let's see more in details how the File Selection window works and what you can do with it.

#tip - For more information about the Project and the Project Library management, please see: What are the Project and the Project Library.

The File Selection Window

In WebSite X5, you will find the following buttons everywhere you can add a file:

  •   the most generic button available for any kind of file;
  •   the button referred to image files;
  •   the button referred to video files.

By clicking on any of these buttons, you open the File Selection window where you will be able to search among the resources stored on your PC, on an online library or available on any other website. The File Selection window will then always be the same, but different sections referred to the possible sources will be displayed according to the kind of file you need to import. The possible sections are:

The Local File section

The first section of the File Selection window, available for all kinds of files, is the one you can search, select and import a file from your local PC.

You can rely on a useful search field, a folder tree and the necessary commands to:

  • Update the content of the selected folder, open the File Explorer in the position of the selected file, access the file properties.
  • Display the file preview in grid or list form, as well as set the size of the preview thumbnails.
  • Order the files by Name, Type, Size or Date

The file Name and Size can also be shown with a tip which is displayed on mouseover.

After importing the file from your local PC, it will automatically be reported in the Project Library.

The Premium Images section

This section of the File Selection window is available only if you need to import an image file: you can access a Library reporting thousands of high-quality and royalty-free Premium Images.

You can easily search the Premium Images with the integrated search engine and the numerous filters. The selected images are reported as drafts with watermarks in the Project Library. If you decide to buy them, the draft will be substituted with the original image, both on the project and in the Resource Library.

#tip - The Premium Images library is powered by Depositphotos, one of the most popular stock images platform worldwide. For more information, please see: What are Premium Images and how to use them.

The Free Images section

Also this section of the File Selection window is available only if you need to import an image file: you can access a rich Library of free images you can freely use of your projects.

You can search an image by keywords, category or type: the image is downloaded on your PC and reported in the project Library.

#tip - The free Images library is powered by Pixabay. For more information, please see: Where can I find free images to use on my website.

The Free Videos section

If  you are going to add a video, this section of the File Selection window will report an archive of free videos which you can freely access.

The videos are downloaded on your PC and reported in the project Library.

#tip - The archive of free videos is offered by Pixabay too.

The YouTube/Vimeo section

If you need to add a video, on the File Selection window you will be able to directly paste the URL of the video on YouTube or Vimeo too.

In this case, the selected file will stay online: it won't be downloaded on your PC and reported in the project Library.

The File from URL section

Regardless the kind of resource, the File Selection window always offers you the possibility of importing an online file. Use the appropriate field to paste the file URL, which you can copy from your browser address bar.  Click on  to make sure the reported URL is correct.

By using this function, the selected file will stay online: it won't be downloaded on your PC and reported in the project Library.

The Library section

Again, this is a section which is always reported on the File Selection window. You can access the Library of resources where all the previously imported files are stored (except the online ones). Here, you can easily find a file which you already added on your website, even if it isn't available on the PC you are working on. Use the search field as well as the options to sort the files by Name, Type, Size or Date. You may use the Import Date particularly useful, namely when you first used the file in question on your project.

The files available in the Library section are simply there because you have used them on your project. If you notice that this section is getting bigger, you can optimize it by deleting the resources you no longer use on the Project.  Check out the guide How to optimize a project for more information.
