In the HTML code the title tags go from <h1></h1> to <h6></h6>. 


The  <h1> tag needs to be used for the main title, the <h2> tag for the first subtitle of the first sub-section and so on until <h6>, if needed. In order to have an effective Page structure, you need to follow the hierarchy of these tags without leaving any level aside. 


With WebSite X5 you are free to choose if you want to manage these heading tags automatically or manually.


How to manage the <h1> and <h2> heading tags automatically

If you want the program to manage your titles by automatically setting the <h1> and <h2> tags, you need to follow these steps:

  • Go to  Step 1 - Website Settings > SEO.
  • Open the Tag section and activate the Automatic Heading tag management option:
    • if you choose H1 for Page Title, the <h1> tag will take on the name or the Title reported for the Page;
    • if you choose H1 for Website Heading and H2 for Page Title, the <h1> tag will take on the name or Page Title and then the Website Title in this structure:  <h1>Page Title - Website Title</h1>. The <h1> tag is reported in the Page source code and it is connected to the Template heading. The <h2> tag will take on the only name or Title for the Page.

Don't forget that:

  • the name is given to a Page when creating the Map in the Sitemap Creation section;
  • the Page Title is defined in the Page Properties window;
  • the Website Title is defined in the Step 1 - Website Settings > General information section.


How to manage heading tags manually

If you want to manually manage heading tags, you need to:

  • Go to Step 1 - Website Settings > SEO.
  • Open the Tag section and select None for the Automatic Heading tag management option


Now you can freely manage your <h1> and <h2> tags by deciding which text elements should be used for these and the other heading tags until <h6>.


You can proceed in different ways. You can use the Title Object for instance:

  • Use the Title Object to insert the titles and the relative title tags in the Template Header on in the Pages.
  • Open the specific Title Object and set the most appropriate heading tag by choosing among the <h1> <h6> values.


Alternatively, you can use the Text Object. In this case, the procedure is different according to the edition you use.


With the Pro edition, you can set Styles to give the Pages the proper structure according to the different heading tags.

  • On Step 2 - Template Settings, open the Text Style section and set the style you want to use for each heading level.
  • Go back to Step 1 - Website Settings > SEO > Tag and activate the Set H1...H6 tag for the Template Headings option.
  • Open the editor of the text you want to work on: select the paragraph and use drop-down menu to apply the wished heading style. In addition to the available options (font, size, color etc.), the corresponding tag <h1>..<h6> will be associated to the text.


On the other hand, the options to manage the Heading tags aren't available in the Evo edition. Still, you can manually add them as code within the text:

  • Once you added the Object, open the editor to type and format the text and the title.
  • Click on the Enable HTML Code button.
  • Include the titles within the specific tags, for example <h1>Title</h1>.


You can do the same with the HTML Code Object: in this case, you will be able to use the available tools to format your texts.
